It’s late November. The air in Charlottesville crackles with excitement. Tailgates stretch along the Corner. Orange and blue flags flap proudly. The Commonwealth Cup is on the line, and for one day, the state of Virginia is divided…fiercely. This is rivalry week at UVA, and the mood is palpable with heart, hope, and just a touch of hubris.

No matter how the season has gone, Cavaliers and Hokies alike circle this game on their calendars because the Commonwealth Cup is a point of pride, a conversation starter, and in some households, a temporary reason for silence at the dinner table. Every year, the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech face off in one of the most storied rivalries in college sports, and no matter the records, this game means everything.

For us at Virginia Guesthouse, your on-Grounds neighbor, we see this week not just as a contest, but a homecoming, a reason for families, alumni, and hopeful students to descend on Charlottesville and stake their claim in the lore.

A Rivalry Steeped in Commonwealth Cup History

It all began in 1895, when the University of Virginia first met Virginia Tech (then called Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College) on the gridiron. More than a century later, the rivalry has only grown louder, and fans have grown a bit more stubborn when it comes to relinquishing bragging rights.

The Commonwealth Cup itself was introduced in 1996, giving a physical form to the thrill of victory that fans already claimed each fall. While Virginia Tech leads the overall series, we must admit that every UVA win feels like poetic justice. In recent years, this was felt none more so than in 2019, when the Cavaliers broke a 15-year drought and stormed Scott Stadium to reclaim the Cup in glorious fashion.

From the chants of “Wahoowa!”* echoing through the stands to the rousing “Good Old Song” sung arm-in-arm, the Cup truly represents Virginia pride.

*Fun Fact: The “Wahoowa” cheer is the reason UVA’s teams are often affectionately called the Wahoos or ‘Hoos, which, to students or alumni, is interchangeable with Cavaliers.

Beyond the Commonwealth Cup: Rivalries Across All Sports

While UVA-Virginia Tech football may steal the spotlight, the two schools go head-to-head across nearly every sport. From the hardwood to pool lanes, this in-state rivalry is fueled year-round.

Sure, Tech has the better record in football, but as you’ll see below, the rest of the head-to-head records are a bit more to our liking. Here’s a look at the all-time series across some of the biggest sports (as of October 2025):

By the Numbers — UVA vs. VT (All-Time Records as of Oct. 2025)

  • Football: VT leads 62--38--5
  • Baseball: UVA leads 111–92
  • Men’s Basketball: UVA leads 99–61
  • Women’s Basketball: UVA leads 53–18
  • Men’s Soccer: UVA leads 44–6–6
  • Women’s Soccer: UVA leads 20–4–2
  • Women’s Lacrosse: UVA leads 27–3
  • Men’s Swimming & Diving: UVA leads 29–8
  • Women’s Swimming & Diving: UVA leads 35–1
  • Men’s Tennis: UVA leads 60–9
  • Women’s Tennis: UVA leads 43–5
  • Softball: VT leads 54–24
  • Wrestling: VT leads 48–27
  • Volleyball: UVA leads 41–40

In short, if it involves a ball, a stick, a net, or a starting whistle, the ‘Hoos and Hokies have probably battled over it.

Virginia vs Virginia Tech Basketball

This rivalry isn’t confined to helmets and touchdowns. On the basketball court, UVA has long held the upper hand. The ‘Hoos lead the all-time series 99–61, a testament to the Tony Bennett era’s blend of discipline and defense. Each matchup feels like a chess match disguised as a brawl, defined by strategic low-scoring affairs.

Women’s Athletics

Women’s sports have their own fierce flavor of the rivalry. While the ‘Hoos dominate historically across lacrosse, soccer, and swimming, Virginia Tech has surged in women’s basketball, especially in recent years.

The result? A competitive rivalry that showcases the depth of Virginia’s collegiate talent on both sides of the aisle (or court).

From NCAA tournament runs to head-to-head ACC match-ups, the Commonwealth Cup spirit isn’t limited to football season; it’s alive anywhere blue meets maroon.

Game Day in Charlottesville: The Heart of the Commonwealth Cup

Few places do gameday quite like Charlottesville. As sunrise hits the Rotunda, the campus comes alive. The smell of tailgate grills, the chorus of laughter from the Corner, the sea of orange and blue flooding McCormick Road, it’s a scene that can make even a first-time visitor feel like they’ve been a Cavalier forever.

When the ‘Hoos run onto the field at Scott Stadium, 60,000 voices rise as one. The sounds of pride, excitement, and a few choice words reverberate off the Blue Ridge Mountains that surround our homefield.

And for those staying at Virginia Guesthouse, the experience is unmatched: no long drive, no traffic, just an easy stroll to the heart of it all. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the Commonwealth Cup atmosphere year after year.

Until Next Time

Win or lose, the Commonwealth Cup always returns to thunderous applause. Every November, the rivalry resets. Fans dust off stories. New classes learn the traditions.

As Virginia Guesthouse prepares to integrate itself with tradition, we’re excited to open our doors and wait for families, alumni, hopeful students, and die-hard fans to immerse themselves in Charlottesville’s spirit.
